Columbus Monument Corporation

The Columbus Monument Corporation was created to preserve and honor the legacy of Syracuse’s Italian American community by celebrating its history, recognizing its contributions, and promoting the values of achievement, pride, and inclusion for generations to come.

Conceived in 1910 by Syracuse University Professor Torquato DeFelice, the Columbus Monument was envisioned as a symbol of achievement, Italian American pride, and belonging. At a time when Italian immigrants faced widespread prejudice, the monument affirmed their place in the fabric of American society.

Today, the Columbus Monument remains an enduring landmark, celebrated annually as a testament to the perseverance of Italian immigrants, their contributions to Syracuse, and their lasting place in the community. It continues to serve as a place of reflection, pride, and enjoyment for all.
